SIRENS

SIRENS: A Reef Requiem in Songs of Eco-Longing an original choral-theatrical work that evokes the sensuous life and precipitous loss of global coral reef ecosystems. Woven from harmony and memory, SIRENS offers a space to grieve ecological losses and to practice how to love without possessing. The piece features ensemble vocal music, spoken word poetry, fibre arts, live foley and puppetry to recreate the magic of a first dive, to feel the devastation of a coral bleaching event, and to gather together in acknowledgement of eco-anxiety and eco-grief.

This work draws inspiration from a specific visit to Honaunau, a bay on the West side of Hawai’i’s Big Island in 2013. The experience was the culmination of a life-long fascination with reef ecosystems, and a true peak moment of my life so far. It’s also a source of great grief, as I learn more and more about the impacts of Climate Change on these delicate landscapes and their inhabitants. SIRENS is my way of honoring both the joy and the grief I feel connected to Honaunau, a way of sharing and keep the memory alive, and an opportunity to share this hard-to-access ecosystem with others in the only way accessible to me as a theatre artist in Oregon.

SIRENS had its first workshop in August of 2026 at Shaking the Tree Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The piece is still in development — more to come soon!
